Read the crack before you fix it
Where a crack runs and what shape it takes usually tells us what caused it, and that decides the repair.
Straight line along a seam
A crack that follows a sheet edge in a perfectly straight line is a tape joint that has let go. Common causes are too little compound under the tape, tape that was never fully embedded, or a joint that dried too fast or too slow.
Diagonal from a door or window corner
Corners of openings concentrate stress from the header above. If a seam lands right at that corner, it almost always cracks. A lasting fix reinforces the joint across the corner rather than just filling the line.
Along the wall-to-ceiling joint
In many homes the roof trusses lift and settle slightly with attic heat and humidity. The ceiling moves while the wall does not, and a rigid taped corner tears open along its length.
Bubbles and loose tape
Blisters or a raised, wrinkled strip mean the tape was laid over a dry or thin bed of compound. It sounds hollow when tapped and will not stay down if you just paint over it.
Ridging on butt joints
Where two factory ends meet there is no taper, so the joint sits proud. If it was not feathered wide enough, you see a raised line in raking light, sometimes with a fine crack down the middle.
Spiderweb cracking
A web of fine lines usually points to a compound coat applied too thick, a plaster surface that is shrinking, or texture laid over a surface that was not primed.
Cosmetic crack or warning sign?
Most drywall cracks are cosmetic: seasonal movement, lumber shrinkage, or joints that were finished poorly the first time. They look bad but say nothing about the structure.
A few patterns deserve a closer look by a structural engineer before any drywall work:
- cracks that are visibly wider at one end, or that grow from month to month
- doors and windows that start sticking at the same time cracks appear
- matching cracks in the slab, floor tile or the outside block walls
- gaps you can slide a coin into
Parts of West Central Florida have sandy soils and known sinkhole activity, so if you see those signs, get the ground checked first. We will point it out if something we see is beyond a drywall repair, and once the cause is addressed we can make the walls right.

How we repair seams and cracks so they stay closed
Filling a crack with spackle or caulk and painting over it hides it for a season. A durable repair rebuilds the joint.
Open it up
Loose and bubbled tape is cut out with a sharp knife, and the crack is opened slightly into a shallow V so new compound has something to bond into. We keep cutting until we reach tape and compound that are fully bonded.
Re-secure the board
If the sheet edges move when pressed, we add screws into the framing on each side. A joint cannot stay closed if the boards on either side of it are still loose.
Re-tape with the right material
We bed fresh paper tape in a setting-type compound, which hardens by chemical reaction, bonds well and shrinks very little. On moving joints such as the wall-ceiling corner we may use a flexible corner tape or a paintable elastomeric sealant instead of rigid compound.
Feather wide
Second and third coats are spread progressively wider so the repaired joint has no hump. Butt joints get feathered much further out than tapered seams, sometimes well over a foot on each side, to hide the extra thickness.
Sand, texture, prime
Once fully dry, the joint is sanded with dust extraction, the surrounding texture is matched and the area is primed so the old crack line does not ghost through paint.
Why Florida homes are hard on taped joints
Joint compound and drywall paper respond to moisture. In a humid summer, especially in homes where the AC is set high or turned off while people travel, board and framing take on moisture and expand slightly; when the AC runs hard again they shrink back. A joint that was taped with a thin bed of mud will not survive many of those cycles.
New construction adds its own movement as lumber dries out over the first year or two. Homes on slabs with block exterior walls can also show cracks where the drywall on interior wood partitions meets the furred-out exterior walls, because the two structures move differently.
Humidity also slows down the repair itself, which is why we favor setting compound for the bedding coat and do not rush to sand and paint. A crack that is re-taped and painted before the compound is dry tends to reappear.
Plaster, ceilings and finishing work
Cracks in plaster are a different material and need different products; our plaster crack and wall restoration team handles those. If a room has many seams showing through the paint, the most efficient fix can be to re-coat the failing joints and skim over the repaired areas, which is the work of our patch finishing and blending team. And when the room is about to be repainted anyway, combining the crack repair with pre-paint drywall preparation saves a second visit.
Cracks that came with a leak or a sagging ceiling are part of a broader wall and ceiling repair job, and we treat them that way.
Seam and crack repair across the region
We fix cracked seams throughout Hillsborough County, with local detail on our Tampa drywall contractor page and the county-wide Hillsborough drywall services page. Further south, there is a dedicated page for crack repair in Manatee County. To get a quote:

A handful of seams is often a one-visit job; long runs and ceilings that need texture and drying time between coats can run one to three days.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the same drywall crack keep coming back?
Because it was filled, not repaired. Paint, caulk or a skim of spackle over a moving joint will split along the same line. A lasting repair removes the failed tape, secures loose board, re-tapes with a setting compound and feathers the joint wide. If the joint moves seasonally, it needs a flexible approach instead.
Is a crack above my door a structural problem?
Usually not. Door and window corners are stress points, and a seam that lands there commonly cracks diagonally. It is worth a closer look if the door has started sticking, the crack is widening, or there are matching cracks in the floor or exterior walls.
Can you fix bubbling or peeling drywall tape?
Yes. Loose tape has to come out, since painting or pressing it back down does not last. We cut out the lifted section, bed new tape in fresh compound, feather it smooth, re-texture and prime so the joint disappears.
Should the crack between my wall and ceiling be caulked?
If it opens and closes with the seasons, a flexible paintable sealant or a flexible corner tape is often the better answer, because rigid compound will crack again. We look at how much it moves before choosing between re-taping and a flexible fix.
How long does seam and crack repair take?
A few cracks in one room are usually finished in a visit. Several rooms, long ceiling seams or repairs that need texture and drying time between coats may take one to three days. Florida humidity can lengthen drying, so we time the coats to the conditions.
