What a TV mount leaves behind

A wall-mounted TV is held by a steel bracket, and that bracket is usually fastened with lag screws into a stud, toggle bolts through the drywall, or both. When it comes down you can end up with four to six fastener holes, a rectangle of paint that is cleaner or darker than the rest of the wall, dents where the plate pressed in, and sometimes a pass-through opening where the cables were run inside the wall.

None of that is difficult to fix, but each piece needs a different treatment. Treating every hole as a nail hole is why so many DIY patches show up as bumps or dimples once the light hits them.

Anchor holes come in several kinds

Before we patch, we identify what was in each hole, because the fix depends on it.

  • Plastic expansion anchors

These ribbed sleeves grip the gypsum from inside. Pulling them usually tears the face, so we often score around the lip and tap the sleeve just below the surface, then fill over it.

  • Toggle and molly bolts

Spring toggles need a hole big enough for the folded wings, which leaves a larger opening once the bolt is out. The wings fall into the cavity harmlessly, and the hole is backed or bridged before filling.

  • Self-drilling threaded anchors

These wide-threaded anchors unscrew cleanly most of the time, but they leave a broad, stripped hole that needs more than one coat to stay flat.

  • Ripped-out anchors

When something heavy was pulled off the wall, the anchor may have taken a cone of gypsum with it. That crater is cut back to firm board and treated like a small hole patch.

Torn paper is the hidden problem

When an anchor or bracket comes out, the brown paper under the paint often peels or fuzzes around the hole. If compound goes straight onto torn paper, the moisture in it soaks in and the paper lifts into bubbles, which then show through every coat.

We trim away loose paper and seal the exposed face with a primer made for torn drywall paper before any compound goes on. It is a small step, and it is the main reason our patches stay flat. The same goes for bracket scars where the plate was glued or painted to the wall: the damaged layer is scraped back, sealed and skimmed smooth.

How we patch mount and anchor holes

  1. Send the photo

Text a picture of the whole wall, and close-ups of the worst holes, to 727-242-8500. You receive a free written quote, usually within the hour, and the quote is the final price.

  2. Clear the old hardware

Screws, anchors and leftover brackets are removed or set below the surface, and torn edges are trimmed back to sound board.

  3. Seal and fill

Exposed paper is sealed. Small holes are filled in two or three thin passes; toggle openings and craters get a small backed or flange patch first.

  4. Skim the bracket area

Dents and ridges where the mounting plate sat are skimmed flat so the whole rectangle reads as one surface.

  5. Texture, prime and touch up

Wall texture is rebuilt over each repair, then primed and touched up with paint. We walk the finished wall with you before payment.

All the small holes in one trip

TV brackets are rarely the only thing coming off the walls. Move-outs and listing prep usually mean curtain rods, shelving, picture hooks, a mirror and a towel bar too. Ten small holes take us far less effort per hole than one, so it makes sense to gather them into a single visit. Tenants preparing for a move-out inspection, landlords turning a unit and agents getting a house ready for photos all book this way. We cannot speak for your landlord's deposit decisions, but we can leave the walls looking the way they did before anything was hung.

If there are dings and dents mixed in with the anchor holes, our page on quick small drywall repairs covers those. A wall behind a door with a handle hole as well can be handled alongside, as explained on our doorknob hole patching page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should drywall anchors be pulled out before patching?

Not always. Pulling a plastic anchor often tears a larger hole than it left. In many cases it is better to cut around the lip, push the sleeve slightly below the surface and fill over it. Metal toggles are unbolted and the wings dropped into the cavity. We choose per hole.

How do you fix a spot where an anchor ripped out of the wall?

The crater is trimmed back to solid gypsum, any torn paper is sealed, and the hole is bridged with a small flange patch or filled over backing, depending on its size. It is then coated, sanded and textured so it matches the surrounding wall.

Will the patched holes show through the paint?

They should not. We fill in thin coats instead of one thick blob, sand flat, match the texture and prime before touching up. The usual giveaway, a small dimple or ring around each hole, comes from skipping those steps.

Can you also rehang my TV on another wall?

No. We do not mount TVs or other fixtures. We repair the drywall afterwards. If you are moving the TV, have it mounted first, then send us photos of the old wall so we can patch everything at once.

Do you patch the hole where the TV cables went into the wall?

Yes. Once any wiring has been removed by whoever installed it, the pass-through opening is patched like any small hole, with backing or a California patch, then textured and touched up with the rest of the wall.
