Texture Matching
Drywall Texture Matching for Walls and Ceilings Across Tampa Bay
A patch can be perfectly flat and still stand out if the texture is off. We identify the pattern on your walls or ceiling, dial it in on a test board and blend it past the repair, for homes in Hillsborough County and throughout the Tampa Bay region.

Know your texture: the common Florida finishes
Most homes in the region carry one of a handful of textures. Each is made a different way, so matching starts with naming it correctly.
Orange peel
A fine, even spray of thinned compound that leaves small dimples, like the skin of the fruit. Common on walls in newer subdivisions. The size of the dimples depends on mix thickness, air pressure and nozzle size.
Knockdown
Compound is spattered on in larger droplets, allowed to firm for a short time, then flattened with a wide knockdown knife. The result is flat-topped islands with smooth valleys between. Very common on ceilings and walls alike.
Skip trowel
Hand-applied with a curved trowel that skips over the surface, leaving irregular, slightly raised patches. Each installer has a signature, so this one depends on hand skill more than equipment.
Sand swirl
A sanded primer or thin compound brushed on in overlapping arcs. Seen in many older homes on ceilings and sometimes walls. The arc size and spacing have to be copied, not guessed.
Popcorn or acoustic
A thick, lumpy spray used on ceilings for decades. Small areas can be patched with acoustic patch material, but texture applied before the mid-1980s may contain asbestos and should be tested before it is disturbed.
Smooth
No texture at all. It sounds easiest, but a smooth surface hides nothing, so a repair has to be finished to a higher standard to stay invisible.
How we match an existing texture
Matching is part science, part practiced eye. This is the sequence that keeps it predictable.
Study the surface
We look at the texture in raking light, measure the size and spacing of the pattern, and note whether it has been painted over many times, which softens the profile.
Make the repair flat first
Texture will not hide a hump or a ridge. The patch is taped, coated, sanded and checked with a straightedge and a work light before any texture goes on.
Test on scrap board
We mix compound to the right consistency and spray or trowel a sample on a spare piece of drywall, adjusting air pressure, nozzle size and mix until the sample matches the wall beside it.
Apply and feather the edges
Texture is applied to the repair and lightly feathered into the surrounding surface so there is no hard border. For knockdown, timing the knockdown pass to when the spatter loses its wet shine is what makes the islands look right.
Prime and paint the field
New texture is more absorbent than old painted texture. Priming the repair and touch-up painting it, or on faded walls having the whole wall or ceiling plane repainted, is what makes the match disappear.
What goes wrong with textured walls and ceilings
In bathrooms and kitchens, steam and humidity soften water-based texture over time, so you see flaking, bubbling or patches that have dropped away. Roof and AC leaks saturate ceiling texture and leave a stained, delaminated area that cannot simply be re-glued; it has to be scraped back, sealed with a stain-blocking primer and re-textured. Storm season adds wind-driven leaks to the list.
The other big cause is earlier repairs. A spray-can patch on a knockdown ceiling, a smooth square in the middle of an orange peel wall, or a texture applied over a hump all draw the eye. We often spend more time undoing a previous patch than on the original damage.
If the underlying board is damaged, the drywall hole and panel repair comes first, and texture goes on once the surface is sound.
Popcorn ceilings and texture removal
Many people who call about texture really want less of it. Removing popcorn from a ceiling is a separate service with its own safety steps: an asbestos test first for homes built before the mid-1980s, full containment, then scraping, skimming and refinishing. See our popcorn ceiling removal service for the full process, or the local pages for popcorn removal in Tampa and textured ceiling removal in Bradenton.
Once the popcorn is gone, you can choose a new finish: a light knockdown or orange peel that forgives small imperfections, or a smooth ceiling, which needs careful skim-coat work; our finishing and blending page explains how finish levels affect the result.

Converting textured walls to smooth
Smooth walls are a popular update, and they are achievable over existing texture. The usual method is to knock down the high points, prime, then apply one or more thin skim coats of compound over the whole wall, sanding between coats until the surface is flat. Heavy textures may need an extra coat; very thick or damaged surfaces sometimes make new quarter-inch board a cleaner option.
It is worth knowing that a smooth wall shows every bump in side light, so the finish has to be done to a high standard. In humid weather each coat needs proper drying time before the next, which we build into the schedule rather than rushing it.
Texture work across the region
We match textures throughout Hillsborough County, with more local detail on the drywall contractors in Tampa page and the Hillsborough County service area page, and across Pinellas, Pasco, Polk, Manatee and Sarasota counties. Before you contact us:
Take a close-up photo of the texture with a light shining across it from the side, plus a wide photo of the whole wall or ceiling.
Put a coin or a tape measure in one close-up so we can judge the scale of the pattern.
Let us know if the area has been painted many times, or if an earlier repair is involved.
Text everything to 727-242-8500 for a written quote, usually within the hour.
Texture work is covered by our 1-year written workmanship warranty and finishes with a walkthrough before payment.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between knockdown and orange peel?
Orange peel is a fine spray left as it lands, giving small, even dimples. Knockdown starts as a heavier spatter that is flattened with a wide knife once it firms slightly, leaving flat-topped islands. Knockdown has more relief and is more common on ceilings.
Why does a texture patch look different after painting?
Fresh compound absorbs paint more than old painted texture, so the sheen and color can read differently even when the pattern matches. Priming the patch and painting the full wall or ceiling plane, corner to corner, usually solves it.
Can you match texture that has been painted many times?
Yes. Layers of paint soften the profile, so we mix and spray a little lighter, then compare on a test board before touching the wall. The aim is to match how it looks now, not how it looked new.
Do aerosol texture cans work for repairs?
For a very small spot, sometimes. For anything larger, the cans struggle to produce a consistent pattern and the spray size is hard to control. A hopper gun with an adjustable nozzle and air pressure gives a far more reliable match.
Is my popcorn ceiling safe to patch?
If the home was built before the mid-1980s, have the texture tested for asbestos before it is sanded, scraped or patched. If the test is clear, small areas can be patched with acoustic material or the ceiling can be removed and refinished.
