What corner bead does, and how it fails

Every outside corner in a drywall wall, the ones that point into the room, is built on a strip called corner bead. It gives the corner a straight, hard edge and holds the joint compound that finishes it. Older and builder-grade homes usually have nailed or crimped galvanised metal bead; newer work often uses paper-faced metal or vinyl bead bedded in compound.

Because it is the sharpest point on the wall, the corner is where impacts land. A dent in the bead pushes the compound off, a crack along the edge means the bead has worked loose, and a peeling paper face means the bond has failed. Patching over the top with spackle rarely lasts, because the bead underneath is still bent or loose. The repair that holds is to remove the damaged length of bead and set a new one.

Types of corner damage we repair

  • Dents and dings

A furniture leg or door handle crushes the bead and leaves a flat or caved spot. Small dents can sometimes be built back up; deep ones mean the bead is bent and gets replaced.

  • Cracks running down the edge

A hairline running parallel to the corner usually means nailed metal bead has loosened from the framing, or the compound over it was applied too thin.

  • Delaminated paper-face bead

The paper flange lifts, bubbles or tears away, often after moisture or a bump. The loose paper has to be cut off and the section reset; painting over it just seals the blister in.

  • Rusted metal bead

Orange streaks or bubbling along a corner mean the galvanising has worn through and the steel is corroding. This is common in bathrooms and in homes near salt water.

  • Chipped edges and missing chunks

Compound knocked off the nose of the corner, exposing metal. Usually a sign the bead was never fully covered or has shifted behind the finish.

  • Bullnose corners

Rounded corners need a matching rounded bead. We replace damaged sections with the same radius so the curve stays continuous.

Rusted bead in coastal homes

Galvanised steel bead is coated to resist corrosion, but salt-laden Gulf air, steamy bathrooms and any past leak will eventually find the weak spots. Rust starts as faint orange freckles under the paint, then swells the compound and pushes it off the corner.

Painting over rust does not stop it; the stain bleeds back and the corrosion keeps going. We cut out the corroded length, check the framing behind it for moisture, and replace it with paper-faced or vinyl bead, which will not rust. The new section is bedded in setting compound, finished out wide and primed with a stain-blocking primer before touch-up paint.

If the rust lines up with a window or exterior wall, there may be a moisture path from outside. That needs fixing by the right trade before the corner is rebuilt, or the problem comes back.

How a corner bead repair is done

  1. Send a photo for a quote

Text a close-up of the damaged corner and one from a few steps back to 727-242-8500. You will usually have a written quote within the hour.

  2. Score and remove the damaged run

We cut through the compound on both sides of the corner, past the damage, and pull out the bent, loose or rusted bead along with any failed paper.

  3. Set a new section

A new length of bead is cut to fit, lined up with the existing corner so the edge stays straight, and bedded in compound or fastened to the framing. Joints to the old bead are tight and flush.

  4. Finish and feather

Two or three coats of compound are spread progressively wider on each face, then sanded under HEPA dust control so the transition is invisible.

  5. Texture and touch-up

Wall texture is matched where needed, and the repaired area is primed and touch-up painted. We walk the corner with you before payment.

Getting a straight line and an invisible blend

A corner repair is judged from across the room. If the new bead is even slightly out of line with the old, light catches it and you see a kink. We sight down the full height of the corner before fastening, and we splice to the existing bead only where it is still straight and firm. Often it is cleaner to replace the corner from floor to ceiling than to join a short piece in the middle of a long run.

Blending is the second half. Corners sit where two walls meet, which means two light angles and often a textured surface on each face. Feathering the compound wide, matching orange peel or knockdown, and touching up paint on both sides are what make the repair disappear. That finishing skill is the same one our drywall finishing team uses on seams and patches.

Where the corner damage comes with other small wall dings, it can all be tackled at one visit. Our small drywall repair page covers quick fixes, and if a door handle has also punched through the wall nearby, see repairing doorknob holes.

Arrange a corner repair

We fix damaged corners in homes, rentals and offices across Hillsborough, Pinellas, Polk, Manatee, Pasco and Sarasota counties; browse the communities we cover. The fastest way to start is a photo by text, or you can get in touch with the office. We repair damaged corners and sections, not whole rooms, and we do not hang new drywall for remodels.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you replace just part of a corner bead?

Yes, if the rest of the corner is straight and firmly attached. We cut back past the damage and splice in a new length. On a long run with damage in the middle, replacing the whole corner can give a straighter line, and we will explain which option suits your wall.

Why does my corner keep cracking even after I patch it?

The bead underneath is probably loose or bent, so it flexes when bumped and breaks the new compound. Filling the crack does not fix that. The loose section needs to be re-fastened or replaced before it is finished again.

Is vinyl or metal corner bead better?

Both work. Paper-faced metal gives a very crisp, impact-resistant edge, while vinyl bead cannot rust and suits bathrooms and humid areas. For coastal homes where rust has already been a problem, we usually recommend a non-rusting option.

Can you add corner guards to protect high-traffic corners?

We focus on repairing the drywall itself. Once the corner is rebuilt and painted, clear or paintable corner guards from a hardware store are easy to add in busy hallways or rentals if you want extra protection.

Will the repaired corner match my wall colour?

We prime and touch-up paint the repaired area and feather it into the surrounding wall. If you have leftover paint from the original job, that gives the closest match. Otherwise we match as closely as possible and point out anything that may show.
