The right patch depends on the size of the hole
Gypsum board is simple material, but a patch only lasts if it is matched to the damage. These are the methods a professional chooses between, roughly from smallest to largest.
Fastener holes and small dings
Picture-hanger holes, shallow dents and popped screw heads are cleaned out, filled with a lightweight compound in two thin passes and sanded flush. Popped fasteners are first reset with a new screw beside them.
Anchor and doorknob holes
For openings roughly up to the size of a fist, a California patch works well: a piece of new board is cut slightly larger than the hole, the gypsum is snapped off the back around its edges, and the remaining paper flange is bedded in compound like tape.
Medium holes on backing
Larger openings are squared up and wood cleats are screwed inside the cavity behind the edges. The new piece screws to those cleats, so it cannot push in or rattle, and the seams are taped like any joint.
Large damage cut to framing
When the hole spans most of a stud bay, or the board around it is crushed, we cut back to the center of the studs or joists on each side. The replacement piece then lands on framing, with blocking added along any edge that would otherwise float.
What usually damages drywall here
Impact damage is the everyday kind: a door swung without a stopper, a dropped piece of furniture during a move, a ladder that slipped. Those are quick, clean repairs.
Water is the expensive kind. In Hillsborough County homes we regularly trace damage to a slow drip from a supply line, an overflowing AC drain pan, a failed shower valve or wind-driven rain during a summer storm. Gypsum wicks water upward, so the visible stain is usually smaller than the wet area behind it. Wet board that is left in place loses strength and can grow mold on its paper facing within days in our humidity.
Then there is trade damage. Plumbers, electricians and HVAC installers have to open walls to do their jobs, and the holes they leave are rarely square or backed. We also cover closing up walls after plumbing work on its own page, because those jobs often come with a deadline such as an inspection or a closing date.
Our drywall repair method
Every repair follows the same sequence. Skipping steps is why many quick fixes crack or show through paint a few months later.

Check for moisture and hidden damage
Before cutting, a moisture meter tells us how far any wetness has spread. Once opened, we look at the back of the board, the framing and the insulation for staining or mold, and widen the cut until we reach clean, dry material.
Install the patch
Replacement board matches the existing thickness, usually half-inch on walls, so the face sits flush. In bathrooms and laundry areas we use moisture-resistant board. Screws are set just below the surface without tearing the paper.
Tape and coat
Seams get paper tape bedded in compound, or fiberglass mesh paired with a setting-type mud. Three coats are typical: a fill coat, a second coat and a wide finish coat, each feathered beyond the last so the patch does not leave a bulge.
Sand, texture and prime
We sand with dust extraction, reproduce the surrounding texture, then prime the repair so the patch and the wall take paint the same way. A final walkthrough with you comes before payment.
Can water-damaged drywall be saved?
Sometimes. Board that got briefly wet, dried quickly and is still hard to the touch can usually stay: we seal any stain with a stain-blocking primer, fix the surface and paint.
It should come out when the core is soft or crumbly, the paper is bubbling away from the gypsum, the bottom edge has wicked water from a flooded floor, or there is any growth on the back. In those cases we cut the wall out above the highest wet line, let the cavity dry, replace insulation if it was soaked and install new board.
If mold covers more than a small patch, or the water was from a sewage or flood source, a remediation specialist should handle that part first. We will say so plainly rather than closing it up.
Where a larger section is too far gone to patch, our damaged drywall replacement service cuts it out and replaces it. Losses that take in whole rooms or whole ceilings are a job for a general contractor or drywall installer.

Why the finish decides whether a repair is visible
A flat, solid patch can still stand out if the texture is wrong or the primer is skipped. Bare joint compound absorbs paint differently from painted drywall, so an unprimed patch shows up as a dull or shiny blotch, called flashing, especially on eggshell and satin walls.
Most Tampa Bay homes have orange peel or knockdown on the walls. We test the pattern on scrap board before spraying the wall and blend the edges outward. For the full detail on how each finish is reproduced, see our wall and ceiling texture matching page. Hairline cracks and failing tape joints are their own repair, explained under seam and crack repair.
Where we work and how to get started
We are based in Clearwater and repair drywall across Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, Polk, Manatee and Sarasota counties. The Hillsborough County drywall contracting overview lists the communities we reach there, and local pages cover drywall repair in Brandon, Riverview drywall patching and our contractor services for Tampa homeowners. Before the visit:
Move furniture and wall hangings a few feet away from the damaged area.
Make sure the cause has been fixed if water was involved, and keep the area ventilated.
Keep pets and children out of the room while we cut and sand.
Expect most small patches to take two to four hours, and larger repairs with texture and dry time between coats to run one to three days.
Every repair is backed by our 1-year written workmanship warranty, and HEPA dust control is standard.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a California patch and when do you use it?
It is a patch cut from new drywall with the gypsum snapped away around the edges, leaving a paper border. The border is bedded in compound so it behaves like tape, which means no backing is needed. It suits holes from doorknobs and anchors but not large or crushed areas, which need backing or framing.
Why did my last drywall patch crack?
The usual causes are a patch with no backing that flexes when touched, mesh tape used with ordinary premixed mud instead of a setting compound, or a single thick coat that shrank as it dried. Humidity slowing the cure can make each of those worse.
Do you replace drywall damaged by a leak?
Yes. Once the leak is repaired, we cut out board that is soft, delaminated or stained on the back, let the cavity dry, replace soaked insulation and fit new board into the opening. Board that dried out firm may only need its stain sealed and the surface refinished.
Is drywall repair worth hiring out?
For a nail hole, probably not. For anything you will see every day, in a ceiling, on textured walls, or tied to water damage, a professional repair saves the repeat attempts that come from wrong materials, missing backing or a texture that never quite matches.
Do you only work in Hillsborough County?
No. We cover all of Hillsborough County plus Pinellas, Pasco, Polk, Manatee and Sarasota counties, working from our base in Clearwater. The free photo estimate works the same wherever you are in that area: text clear pictures of the damage and we reply with a written quote.
