Section Replacement
Damaged Drywall Replacement in Hillsborough County
Some drywall is past patching: soft from a leak, crumbling, moldy or holed too wide to bridge. We cut that section back to the framing, fit new board into the opening, then tape, texture, prime and touch up so it blends with the wall around it.

When a patch is not enough
A patch works when the board around the damage is still sound. Once the gypsum core is soft, wet, crumbling or growing mold, compound has nothing solid to hold on to, and the right fix is to remove that piece and put in new board. Typical reasons we replace a section instead of patching it:
- a leak under a sink, behind a toilet or from an AC drain line has left the lower wall spongy
- a ceiling spot below a bathroom or roof leak is stained, soft or starting to droop
- the board has wicked water up from the floor after an overflow
- mold is visible on the face or, once opened, on the back of the board
- a hole is so large, or so ragged, that a backed patch cannot bridge it
- a corner or lower wall has been crushed by furniture, a door or a dolly
We replace the damaged section only, not the whole wall or room. If you are not sure which side of the line your damage falls on, our drywall hole and patch repair page covers the smaller jobs, and a photo by text usually settles it.
What we do and what we leave to others
We are a patch and repair company. Damaged drywall replacement means cutting out a defined area, usually between two studs or joists or a few feet of lower wall, and making that area disappear back into the surface.
We do not hang drywall in whole rooms or whole houses, finish remodels, additions or garage conversions, or work on new construction. If your water loss has ruined most of a ceiling or several walls, or you are opening a room up for a remodel, a general contractor or drywall installer is the right call, and we will tell you so up front rather than quote a job outside our scope.
Where the source of the damage is still active, such as a dripping pipe or a roof leak, that has to be fixed first by a plumber or roofer. Our repairs after the plumber page explains how we follow on once the leak is stopped.

How we replace a damaged section
Each step is about making a cut-out repair as flat and invisible as a small patch.
Find the edge of the damage
We probe and, where moisture is suspected, check readings outward from the stain until we reach firm, dry board. The cut line goes beyond that point, not at the edge of the visible mark.
Contain and cut back to framing
The area is sealed off, floors are covered and HEPA dust control runs while we cut. Where we can, edges land on the centre of a stud or joist so the new piece has solid support; otherwise we add backing.
Check the cavity
With the section open we look at the framing and insulation for lingering moisture, staining or mold. Wet cavities are left to dry before anything is closed up, and anything beyond drywall goes to the right trade.
Fit, fasten and tape
New board of the same thickness, moisture-resistant where the location calls for it, is cut to fit snugly, screwed off and taped on every edge with setting compound for the first coat.
Texture, prime and touch up
Joints are feathered wide, the existing texture is matched, and the repaired area is primed and touch-up painted so it blends with the surrounding wall.
Making the replaced section disappear
A cut-out repair is bigger than a patch, so blending matters even more.
Same thickness, same plane
Most walls are half-inch board and many ceilings are thicker. Matching the original thickness keeps the new piece flush, so joints do not need a heavy build of compound to hide a step.
Wide, thin feathering
Joints around a section are feathered well past the tape so there is no ridge to catch window light. Our patch finishing and blending work covers how far we take this on smooth or sheen-painted walls.
Texture matched on scrap first
Orange peel, knockdown and skip trowel are tested on scrap board before they go on your wall, as described on our texture matching page.
Primed so paint takes evenly
New paper and compound absorb paint differently from the old wall. Priming the repaired area stops it showing as a dull patch once touch-up paint goes on.
Water, mold and Florida conditions
Most section replacements we see start with water: a slow supply-line drip, a failed wax ring, a clogged condensate line or wind-driven rain during hurricane season. Drywall that stays damp in Florida humidity can grow mold within days, and stained board often hides wetness that has spread further than the mark.
That is why we cut back to dry, firm board, use moisture- and mold-resistant drywall in bathrooms, laundry areas and next to water heaters, and never close up a wet cavity. Small, localised mold on the board itself is removed along with the section; widespread mold in a wall or attic needs a remediation company first. Homes built before the mid-1980s may have textures or joint compound that should be tested for asbestos before the board is cut. Our guide to repairing water-damaged drywall goes into the warning signs in more detail.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you replace just part of a drywall wall?
Yes, that is exactly what this service is. We cut out the damaged area, usually back to the nearest studs, fit new board into the opening and tape, texture, prime and touch it up. The rest of the wall stays as it is, so there is no need to redo the whole surface.
How far back do you cut water-damaged drywall?
Past the point where the board is firm and dry, not just past the stain. Water travels inside the gypsum core and up the paper, so we test outward from the mark before choosing a cut line, and we try to land the edges on framing for solid support.
Do you replace drywall in a whole room or for a remodel?
No. We replace damaged sections, not whole rooms or houses, and we do not hang board for remodels, additions, garage conversions or new construction. For that kind of project a general contractor or drywall installer is the better fit, and we will say so when you send photos.
Will the replaced section match my textured wall?
Yes. We match the existing texture on scrap board first, then apply it to the repair and feather it into the surrounding wall. After priming, we touch up the repaired area with paint so it blends; if your paint has faded, we will tell you whether a touch-up will show.
Do you deal with the leak or mold behind the wall?
The leak itself needs a plumber or roofer before we close anything up. Small mold on the damaged board comes out with the section. If mold has spread through the cavity or framing, a remediation company should handle that first, and we replace the drywall afterward.
