Ceiling Joints & Seams
Ceiling Crack Repair That Stays Closed
Ceiling cracks are usually movement, not failure. Roof trusses shift with the seasons, seams flex, and old tape lets go. We work out why your ceiling cracked, then repair it with a method that allows for that movement so the line does not come straight back.

The three ceiling cracks we see most
Where a crack sits and which way it runs says a lot about its cause. Look up and compare yours to these.
The wall-to-ceiling joint
A straight gap along the top of an interior wall, often in the middle of the house. It can open in one season and almost close in another. This pattern is the classic sign of truss uplift.
Over doors and windows
A diagonal crack running from the corner of a door frame or window header up onto the ceiling. Openings concentrate stress, so normal settling and slamming doors show up here first.
Along a board seam
A long, straight line, sometimes with a ridge or loose tape, running the length or width of a room. It follows where two sheets of drywall meet and usually means the tape joint has lost its bond.
Truss uplift, explained without the jargon
Most Florida homes with pitched roofs are framed with engineered trusses. The bottom piece of each truss lies buried in attic insulation, where it stays cool and fairly dry. The top pieces sit right under the roof deck, where they bake in the sun and soak up humidity. Because the top and bottom pieces gain and lose moisture at different rates, the whole truss can arch slightly upward in the middle of a room.
The ceiling drywall is attached to that bottom chord. The wall top plate is not moving. So the ceiling pulls away from the wall and a crack appears right along the corner. A hard, rigid repair there will simply crack again the next time the trusses move.
The fix is to stop the ceiling and wall from being locked together at that corner. We use flexible corner products or a slip joint, and where the ceiling is fastened directly into a non-bearing wall's top plate, we may relocate those fasteners so the board can float. This is a normal behaviour of trusses, not a defect in the house.

How we fix ceiling cracks
Diagnose from a photo
Text a picture of the crack, plus a wider shot, to 727-242-8500. The direction, location and width tell us a lot, and you get a written quote, usually within the hour.
Open up the old repair
Cracks that have been caulked or painted over get scraped back to sound material. Loose tape is cut out so we are not building on a failed joint.
Secure the board
Where a seam has sagged, we add screws into the framing to pull the sheets tight. Any nail pops along the run get handled in the same pass.
Choose a flexible method
Moving cracks get mesh or paper tape embedded in setting compound, flexible corner bead or an elastomeric treatment, depending on how much the joint travels.
Match and touch up
We feather the repair wide, match the ceiling texture, and prime and touch-up paint the area. You walk through it with us before paying.
When a ceiling crack needs an engineer
Nearly every ceiling crack we are asked about is cosmetic. Still, some patterns are worth having a structural engineer look at before anyone patches over them. As general guidance, get a professional opinion if you notice:
- A crack that keeps widening month over month rather than opening and closing with the seasons
- A ceiling that has visibly dropped or sags along the crack
- Cracks that line up with matching cracks in exterior block walls or the slab
- Doors and windows nearby that suddenly start sticking or will not latch
- One side of the crack sitting noticeably lower than the other
We are a drywall patch company, so we do not diagnose structural issues. If your crack fits any of the above, we will recommend you speak to an engineer first and come back to make the surface good once any underlying work is done.
Why caulk and paint are not enough
A bead of caulk in the wall-to-ceiling corner can look fine for a few months, but it skins over, shrinks and shows a dark shadow line. Spackle pressed into a seam crack has no tape behind it, so it breaks loose along the same line. Both methods treat the symptom.
A lasting repair has three parts: a joint that is mechanically fastened, a tape that bridges the gap, and a finish that allows for whatever movement remains. That is the same thinking behind our seam and crack repair service, applied overhead where gravity and heat make everything harder.
Ceiling cracks often show up alongside other small defects. If you are seeing round bumps in lines across the ceiling, read about nail pop repair; if a brown ring has appeared near the crack, our water stain repair page explains how leaks are handled.
Where we work
We repair ceiling cracks in homes, rentals and condos across Hillsborough, Pinellas, Polk, Manatee, Pasco and Sarasota counties. See every county and town on our service map, or send us a message if you would like to book a visit. We repair the damaged area only; full ceiling replacements and remodels are better handled by a general contractor.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the crack between my wall and ceiling open and close?
That seasonal pattern points to truss uplift. Roof trusses swell and shrink as attic temperature and humidity change, lifting the ceiling away from interior walls and then letting it settle. A flexible repair at that corner lets the ceiling move without tearing the finish.
Are ceiling cracks a structural problem?
Most are not. Hairline seam cracks, corner gaps and short cracks over doors are typical of drywall on a moving frame. A crack that keeps widening, a sagging ceiling, or cracks matched by exterior wall damage deserve a structural engineer's opinion before any cosmetic repair.
Can you fix a ceiling crack without repainting the whole room?
Yes. We prime and touch-up paint only the repaired area, feathering it so it blends with the existing ceiling. Very old or heavily yellowed ceilings can show a slight difference, and we will point that out in advance.
How long does a ceiling crack repair take?
A single crack is usually a short visit, but setting compound, texture and paint each need drying time, so some jobs take a second short trip. Your written quote will say what to expect.
My popcorn ceiling has a crack. Can you fix it?
We can, but popcorn texture in homes built before the mid-1980s may contain asbestos, so a test is needed before we disturb it. Once it is cleared, we repair the crack and re-apply a matching texture over the area.
