Read the crack before you fix it
Cracks are clues. Their direction and location usually tell us what is moving, and that decides the repair.
Straight line along a seam
The tape joint has lost its bond, often from humidity swings or a thin first coat. Common in hallways and across ceilings.
Diagonal from a door or window corner
A stress crack where the framing around the opening flexes slightly. Spackle alone will reopen; it needs re-taping with a reinforced joint.
Gap where ceiling meets wall
Often seasonal truss movement in single-story homes. It opens and closes, so rigid filler fails.
Bubbled or peeling tape
Tape that was set in too little compound, or that got damp from a leak or a steamy bathroom, lifts in blisters and long strips.
Wide, stair-stepped or growing
May point to foundation or structural movement. We repair the finish but will tell you when a structural professional should look first.
How we rebuild a seam so it stays closed
Open it up
We cut out the loose tape and crumbling compound along the full length of the crack, not just the visible part, until we reach well-bonded material.
Secure the board
Loose edges and popped fasteners are re-screwed so the two sides of the joint cannot move independently.
Re-tape with setting compound
New paper tape is bedded in setting-type compound, which cures hard even in humid weather and bonds better than ready-mix alone.
Feather and texture
Two or three wide finish coats, sanding under HEPA dust control and a texture pass so the line disappears under paint.
Manatee County's mix of homes, and their cracks
Manatee covers a lot of ground. On Anna Maria Island, in Holmes Beach and around the fishing village of Cortez, coastal homes face salt air and storm-driven humidity that loosen tape over time. Older neighborhoods in Bradenton and Palmetto along the Manatee River have decades of settling behind them. Newer construction in Parrish, Ellenton and Heritage Harbour tends to show early nail pops and seam lines as fresh framing dries. Out east in rural Myakka City and Duette, larger homes on bigger lots bring long ceiling runs that crack along joints.
The repair method stays the same in each place; what changes is the cause we are treating and how much movement we plan for.
Why the summer wet season matters
Florida's rainy season brings long stretches of very humid air, and drywall, wood framing and joint compound all take on moisture and swell slightly. When the drier months return, they shrink. A weak joint fails at that moment, which is why many Manatee homeowners notice cracks reopening around the same time every year.
Keeping indoor humidity steady with the air conditioning helps, and a properly rebuilt joint resists the cycle. For the broader service, including ceiling seams, see our seam and crack repair service; for holes and water-damaged board, see drywall repair.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my drywall crack keep coming back?
Usually because it was filled rather than re-taped. Compound or caulk on its own cannot bridge a joint that moves with the seasons. We remove the failed tape, secure the board, and rebuild the joint with paper tape and setting compound so the seam can handle normal movement.
Is a diagonal crack above a door serious?
Most are cosmetic stress cracks from slight flexing around the opening. If it is wide, growing quickly, or the door has started to stick, it is worth having a structural professional assess it. We will repair the finish either way and tell you what we see.
What causes drywall tape to bubble or peel?
Tape that was bedded in too little compound, or that has been exposed to moisture from a leak or a poorly ventilated bathroom. We cut out every loose section, fix any moisture source with you, and re-tape the joint properly.
