You did the sensible thing and asked several companies to look at the damage. Now you have a handful of estimates for what seems like the same job, and they don't line up. One is a single line with a number. Another runs half a page. A third mentions texture but not paint.
Comparing drywall contractors in Hillsborough County isn't about finding the "best" company in the abstract. It's about working out which quote actually covers the finished result you want. This guide gives you a line-by-line method.
Step 1: Make sure everyone quoted the same job
Different numbers often mean different scopes, not different prices for the same work. Before you compare totals, write down what you need finished:
- Every area to be repaired (room, wall or ceiling, approximate size)
- Whether the surface is smooth or textured, and which texture
- How far the paint should go: patch only, the full wall, or the whole room
- Any special conditions: high ceilings, stairwells, occupied rooms, pets
Send the same list and the same photos to every company. If one contractor saw the job in person and another quoted from a text message, make sure both had the same information.
Step 2: Break each quote into its parts
Lay the quotes next to each other and check each of these lines.
Repair method
Does the quote say how the damage will be fixed? A doorknob hole might be a mesh patch or a cut-in piece of new drywall with backing. A water-damaged ceiling might be "patched" or "cut out and replaced to sound board." The method tells you whether the repair will last.
Finishing
How many coats of compound, and what level of finish? A patch that's left slightly proud or poorly feathered will show under paint, especially near windows.
Texture matching
If your walls are orange peel or knockdown, the quote should say texture will be matched. A smooth patch on a textured wall is one of the most common reasons homeowners end up unhappy.
Primer and paint
Is priming included? Who supplies the paint? Is the paint scope the patch, the wall, or the room? This single line explains many of the big differences between quotes.
Protection and cleanup
Will floors and furniture be covered? Is dust control included? Sanding compound creates fine dust that travels through a house. Ask how it's contained.
Moisture and cause
For water damage, does the quote assume the leak is already fixed? Does it include checking for moisture or mold behind the board?
Warranty
Is there a written workmanship warranty, and for how long?
Step 3: Score what matters to you
Once the quotes are broken down, you can compare like with like. A simple way is to give each line a tick, a cross or a question mark. Question marks become your follow-up calls.
Useful questions to ask:
- "Is this price final, or can it change once you start?"
- "Will the same crew do the repair and the texture?"
- "What happens if the patch shows after it's painted?"
- "How do you handle the walkthrough at the end?"
How a contractor answers — clearly, quickly, in writing — tells you a lot about how the job will go.
Step 4: Check the basics
Before you sign anything:
- Confirm the company carries insurance, and ask for proof
- Look at recent reviews across more than one platform
- Ask whether technicians are background-checked if they'll be working in an occupied home
- Make sure you have a phone number and address, not just a cell number on a flyer

Red flags when comparing quotes
- A price with no description of the work
- Large upfront deposits on small repair jobs
- "We'll figure out the paint later"
- Pressure to decide immediately
- No mention of how dust will be handled
Where the lowest bid can cost more
The cheapest quote often leaves out texture, primer or paint, or assumes the minimum repair. When those items get added mid-job, or when a patch has to be redone because it shows, the "cheap" option can end up costing more than the mid-range quote that included everything.
How The Patch Guyz quote
We want our quotes to be easy to compare. Every estimate is written, the written quote is the final price with no hidden fees, and it spells out the repair, texture, primer and touch-up paint on the repaired area. If you want a whole wall or room repainted, we will tell you plainly that it is a job for a painter. HEPA dust control is standard, technicians are background-checked, we do a walkthrough with you before payment, and the work is backed by a one-year written workmanship warranty. You can see the full sequence on our what to expect page.
