Call a drywall company and the first question you will hear is "what's going on?" That is because residential drywall services cover a wide spread of jobs, and the right fix depends on what failed and why. A hole from a door handle, a water-stained ceiling and a full garage conversion are all "drywall work," but they need very different crews, materials and timelines.
Here is a plain-language breakdown of what is on the menu for Tampa Bay homes.
The Main Types of Residential Drywall Work
Patch and repair
This is the most common call. It covers holes, dents, cracked seams, nail pops, popped corner bead and damage left behind by other trades. Small holes get a patch and several coats of compound. Larger holes get a new piece of drywall screwed to backing, then taped and finished. The real skill is in making the repair disappear once it is painted, including matching any wall texture. Our page on small drywall repairs shows the typical jobs.
Seam and crack repair
Cracks that run straight along a seam, or diagonally off the corners of doors and windows, are usually the result of movement, poor original taping or humidity cycles. Re-taping the joint properly holds far better than smearing compound over the crack. Our seam and crack repair service is built around exactly this.
Replacement after water damage
When drywall has been soaked, especially in a ceiling, patching the surface is not enough. The wet section is cut back to sound board, the cavity is dried, and new board goes in. Florida's heat and humidity make speed important here because mold can begin on wet paper facing quickly.
New installation
Room additions, garage conversions, closed-in lanais and remodels all need new drywall hung and finished. This is a bigger project with more coordination involved: inspections, insulation, and scheduling around other trades. It is also a different trade from repair. The Patch Guyz don't do new installation, so for this kind of project call a drywall installer or general contractor.
Texture and finishing
Knockdown, orange peel, smooth Level 5 walls, or removing an old popcorn ceiling. Texture work often goes hand in hand with repairs, because a patch only looks right once its texture matches the wall around it.
Choosing the Right Drywall Board for Florida
Not all drywall is the same, and in a humid, storm-prone state the choice matters.
- Standard board suits most dry living areas such as bedrooms, living rooms and hallways.
- Moisture- and mold-resistant board is a smart choice for bathrooms, laundry rooms, kitchens and exterior-wall closets that tend to run damp.
- Fire-rated board is thicker with a denser core. It is often required on the wall and ceiling between an attached garage and the house.
- Impact- or abuse-resistant board has a tougher face. It is worth considering in high-traffic hallways, kids' rooms and rentals.
Whatever the board, it should never be used as a shower backer. Tile in wet areas needs a cement or foam backer system.
Repair or Replace?
A good rule of thumb:
- Repair when the damage is cosmetic or limited to a defined area and the board behind it is dry and firm.
- Replace when the board is soft, crumbling, sagging, stained through from a leak, or showing mold on the back face.
If you are not sure, press gently around the damaged area. Drywall that flexes or feels spongy has lost its strength.
Painting Is Part of the Job
Fresh compound absorbs paint differently from the painted wall around it. Without primer, a patch will "flash" and show through as a dull or shiny spot even after two coats. A complete drywall service either includes primer and paint or leaves the surface properly sealed and ready for your painter. Ask which one you are getting. Our painting prep team primes every repair and touch-up paints the patched area; repainting whole rooms is left to your painter.
What a Good Service Visit Looks Like
When The Patch Guyz take on a residential job, the process looks like this:
- You text a photo to 727-242-8500 and get a written estimate, usually within the hour. Free virtual estimates mean no one has to visit just to give you a number.
- The written quote is the final price, with no add-on fees.
- Background-checked technicians protect floors and furniture and run HEPA dust control.
- The repair is finished, textured, primed and, where agreed, touch-up painted to blend.
- You do a walkthrough before paying, and the work carries a 1-year written workmanship warranty.
Common Problems We See in Tampa Bay Homes
- Hairline cracks over doorways in slab-on-grade homes as the house settles
- Nail pops in ceilings, especially in rooms that swing between AC and open windows
- Ceiling stains below AC air handlers and condensate lines
- Damage left after a plumber or electrician opens a wall
- Sagging ceiling drywall after a roof leak during storm season
