Two painters can quote the same Tampa living room and deliver very different results. The difference is rarely the brand of paint. It is what happens before the first coat: patching, sanding, priming and protecting the room. That part is invisible in a quick photo but obvious once the afternoon sun hits the wall.
Here is how to compare painting contractors on what actually determines the finish.
Get clear on your project first
Before you call anyone, walk the rooms and write down:
- Which walls, ceilings, doors and trim are included
- Any cracks, holes, nail pops or water stains
- Whether you are changing colour dramatically (dark to light usually needs more coats)
- Any rooms with high humidity, such as bathrooms and laundry rooms
- Your timing, including any dates the house must be finished by
A written list means every contractor quotes the same job, which makes comparing them much easier.
Ask how surface prep is handled
This is the single most useful question. A reliable painter should explain:
Repairs
Who fixes the holes, cracks and dents? Some painters do small fills themselves; larger drywall damage may need a specialist. Either way, it should be in the quote. Paint will not hide a crack – it will often make it more noticeable. We don't paint rooms ourselves, but our drywall painting prep service exists for exactly this stage: fixing the wall before your painter arrives.
Cleaning and sanding
Walls in kitchens and busy hallways collect grease and grime. Paint does not bond well to dirty surfaces. Look for a contractor who mentions cleaning and light sanding.
Primer
Every patch should be primed before paint. Bare joint compound soaks up paint differently and shows through as a dull or shiny spot. Ask where primer will be used and whether it is a full coat or spot priming.
Compare the paint specification
A quote that just says "two coats" is not enough. Ask:
- Which product line, and which sheen for walls, ceilings and trim?
- Is the paint suitable for humid rooms?
- How many coats, and is that based on your colour change?
In Florida, a washable eggshell or satin is a common choice for living areas, and bathrooms benefit from paint designed for moisture. Flat paint is popular on ceilings because it hides imperfections.
Check protection and cleanup
Painting inside an occupied home means protecting floors, furniture and fixtures. Ask how the contractor:
- Covers floors and moves or wraps furniture
- Masks outlets, switches and hardware
- Handles dust if any sanding is involved
- Leaves the room at the end of each day
Look at real work, not just reviews
Online reviews are helpful, but photos of finished walls tell you more. Ask to see close-ups of trim lines and ceilings, which are where sloppy work is easiest to spot. If possible, ask for examples in homes similar to yours – an older block home in Seminole Heights presents different challenges from a new build in a Brandon subdivision.
Get it in writing
A reliable contractor will put the following on paper:
- Rooms and surfaces included
- Prep work, repairs and primer
- Paint products, sheens and number of coats
- Start date and expected duration
- Payment terms
- Any warranty, and what it covers
Be cautious of large upfront deposits on small jobs, prices that change once work starts and contractors who will not commit to a written scope.
Timing your paint project in Tampa
Interior painting can be done year-round, but humidity matters. Paint dries more slowly in muggy conditions, so keep the AC running during and after the job. If drywall repairs are part of the project, schedule them first so compound has fully dried before primer goes on.
Where The Patch Guyz fits in
To be clear about our role: The Patch Guyz are not a painting contractor, and we don't paint rooms or houses. We fix the part that makes or breaks a paint job, the wall underneath. Our team repairs cracks, holes, popped nails and screws and water damage, matches texture, primes every repair and touch-up paints the repaired spots, with our paint supervisor, Daryl, checking that each patch blends. From there, the painter you hire takes over. Every job includes HEPA dust control and a 1-year written workmanship warranty, and we walk through the finished work with you before payment.
If you need patches and seams finished so they won't show through the new paint, see our drywall finishing work or browse our Tampa drywall contractor page. For a homeowner's checklist before the painters arrive, read what to do before interior painting.
