You've sent the photos, approved the quote and booked a date. Now what? A drywall repair is a short, focused job, but how the house is set up when the crew arrives affects how quickly they can work and how clean things stay.
This checklist covers what to do in the days before, on the morning of, and at the end of a drywall repair visit, so the result is exactly what you expected.
A few days before
Confirm the scope
Re-read your quote. Make sure every area you want fixed is listed and that the paint scope matches your expectations — primed only, or primed and touch-up painted over the repair. Repainting a full wall or room is a separate job for a painter. If you've spotted another crack or hole since, mention it now so it can be added to the same visit rather than needing a second trip.
Find your paint information
If paint is part of the job, look for:
- Leftover cans, labelled by room
- The brand, colour name or code, and sheen
- Receipts or notes from the original painter or builder
If you have nothing, let the company know so they can plan to colour-match or recommend painting the full wall.
Fix the cause
If the repair follows a leak, make sure the roof, plumbing or AC issue has been repaired and the area is dry. A ceiling repaired over an active leak will be damaged again. If you're not sure whether the area is fully dry, say so; your repair technician can check.
Arrange access
- Will someone be home, or will you leave a key or code?
- Is there parking near the entrance for a work vehicle?
- In a condo or HOA community, do you need to register contractors, reserve an elevator or follow set working hours?
The day before
Clear the work area
Move furniture away from the walls being repaired, ideally a few feet, and to the centre of the room for ceiling work. Take down:
- Pictures, mirrors and shelves near the repair
- Curtains and rods if the repair is near a window
- Items on dressers or shelves under a ceiling repair
Heavy furniture you can't move is fine; the crew will cover it. But fragile and valuable items are best put away.
Plan for pets and kids
Repairs involve open tubs of compound, tools, and doors that may be propped open. Keep pets in another room or out of the house, and keep children away from the work area.
Think about the AC
Running the AC helps joint compound dry in Tampa's humidity. Keep the system on, but expect the crew may cover vents and returns near the work area while sanding to stop dust circulating.
On the day
Walk the crew through the job
Spend a couple of minutes showing the technician each area. Point out anything you want handled with extra care, and anything you're particularly fussy about, such as a wall that catches morning sun.
Expect protection first
Before any work begins, a careful crew will lay drop cloths, mask off the area with plastic and set up dust control. At The Patch Guyz, HEPA dust control is standard on every job, and our technicians are background-checked.
Understand drying time
Many repairs need more than one coat of compound, and each coat has to dry. Small repairs may be finished in a single visit using fast-setting compounds; larger repairs, texture and paint may require a return visit. Ask your technician what to expect. Our guide on how long drywall repair takes explains the typical timelines.
The walkthrough
Before you pay, walk through the finished work. Check each area:
- Look at the patch straight on, then from the side with a light or window behind it
- Run your hand lightly over the surface for ridges or dips
- Check that texture blends into the surrounding wall
- Check paint coverage and colour match in natural light
- Make sure furniture is back, floors are clean and debris is gone
If something doesn't look right, say so now. A good company wants to hear about it before it leaves. At The Patch Guyz, the walkthrough before payment is part of every job, and our work is covered by a one-year written workmanship warranty.
After the repair
- Give fresh paint a few days to cure before hanging pictures or scrubbing
- Keep leftover paint labelled for future touch-ups
- Keep your quote and warranty paperwork
