Sizing up the damage

The right repair depends mostly on size and whether the board is still sound. A rough guide:

  • Nail and screw holes

Filled, sanded and touched up. The main challenge is matching texture and sheen so the spot doesn't flash.

  • Fist- or doorknob-sized holes

Too big for filler alone. The hole is squared off, backing is installed and a new piece of board is fitted, taped and finished.

  • Large openings

Plumber or electrician cut-outs and impact damage. Cut back to the nearest framing where possible so the new board is well supported.

  • Wet, soft or mouldy board

Not patched. Removed back to dry, sound material, the cavity checked, and new board installed once the source is fixed.

Why patches fail

Most failed repairs we're called to redo share the same faults. There was no backing, so the patch flexed and cracked. Compound went on too thick in one coat and shrank. Edges weren't feathered wide enough, leaving a visible hump. Or paint went straight over bare compound, which absorbs differently and shows as a dull or shiny spot.

None of that is complicated to avoid, but it takes time: backing, thin coats with drying time between them, wide feathering and primer. That's how our drywall repair service works on every job, from a single hole upward.

Texture is half the job

A perfectly flat patch on a textured wall stands out as clearly as a hole. Florida homes use a lot of sprayed orange peel and knockdown, plus hand-applied finishes in older houses. We look at the size, spacing and flatness of the existing texture and reproduce it, testing on a scrap board first when the area is large. See our texture matching page for the finishes we work with.

On ceilings, popcorn texture in homes built before the mid-1980s should be tested for asbestos before it's disturbed.

What a good quote includes

  • A description of each area and the repair method, not just a total.

  • Whether texture matching and primer are included.

  • Dust control and clean-up.

  • Whether the price is final or an estimate that may change. Ours is the final price.

  • The workmanship warranty, in writing. Ours is one year.

Common causes we see in Pasco homes

Across Pasco County, most wall and ceiling damage comes from a handful of sources: summer storms pushing water past roofs and windows, attic AC units with clogged condensate lines, plumbing leaks inside walls, normal settling as homes age, and openings left by other trades. When a plumber, electrician or HVAC technician has had to cut in, our after-trades repairs close the openings and blend them.

Frequently Asked Questions

How large a hole can be patched rather than replaced?

Almost any hole in sound drywall can be patched; size changes the method, not the possibility. Small holes are filled. Larger ones get backing and a new piece of board. Replacement of a full section is only needed when the board is wet, crumbling or damaged across a wide area.

Why does my old patch show through the paint?

Usually the patch wasn't primed, so it absorbs paint differently, or the edges weren't feathered wide enough and cast a shadow. Re-feathering, matching the texture and priming before painting fixes it.

Can you give me a quote without coming out?

Yes. Free virtual estimates are our standard. Text a clear photo, ideally with something for scale and a close-up of the surrounding texture, to 727-242-8500. The written quote you receive is the final price.

Do you warranty your drywall repairs in Monroe?

Yes. Every repair comes with a 1-year written workmanship warranty. If a patch cracks, shrinks or shows through because of our work within that year, we come back and fix it. Damage from new leaks or impacts isn't covered, but we're happy to quote those separately.
